Tony Sweeney - President

For many years my judo activity has been based in London Area clubs and dates back to 1959 as a brown belt. With the benefit of London training I progressed through the grades, winning my 4th Dan line-up in 1962, and then gained consecutive bronze medals in the 1963, 1964 and 1965 European Championships. I represented Great Britain at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as Heavyweight, and in the World Championships of the following year. In 1967 I became an International Referee, and this began an intensive period of activity refereeing at domestic competitions, Europeans, and World events until 1990, when I increased my focus on coaching and other aspects of judo.

A key part of my experience has been working as a volunteer within the British Judo Association. From the mid 1960's I was involved in the training of British national and international referees, as well as refereeing at BJA events. Other BJA roles have included chairing the National Technical Coaching Committee, serving as a National Team Selector, and as a BJA Senior Examiner and Tournament Director.

Since the 1970's I have taught judo professionally in a number of schools in West London, and am currently teaching in a senior school in Barnes.

My concern for the infrastructure, advancement and future of judo has been a strong motivator throughout my judo career, both in my professional and voluntary work. I have been involved in coaching the BJA squads as well as the important day-to-day training, primarily with London judoka - these London members in many cases becoming successful internationals and some have famously won Olympic medals. My voluntary work has also spanned universities, schools, and other BJA groups such as the Police, Combined Services, and Area events throughout most parts of the UK.

I am honoured to have been elected President of the London Area at the Association's 2009 AGM. I believe that London's hosting of the Olympics in 2012 represents a fantastic opportunity for the profile and development of our London judo, and I am proud to be involved in this important work.

Tony Sweeney 9th Dan

Peter Blewett - Chairman

I am very proud to have been elected to the London Area Committee.

I have been a member of the British Judo Association since 1965. I achieved my first Dan at the Budokwai in 1973 and I have been training regularly and promoting judo in London since then. I have represented Great Britain at both junior and senior level. I have been the Chief Instructor at the Budokwai since 1986 and I am currently a Senior Club Coach and Senior Examiner of the British Judo Association.

In my professional life I am currently a Director of a Academy in Berkshire and a graduate of Physical Education. Increased participation and raising levels of achievement and celebrating success are core elements of my professional work. Writing development plans and driving them to successful outcomes is a particular feature of my current position.

The London Area has the potential to play a key role in supporting the British Judo Association in delivering its ambitious program of sustaining the ethos of Sport for All, development of the Clubs Recognition Scheme and achievement of International success particularly at the 2012 Olympic Games which will be held here in London. In the recent past London has had a poor record of administration, lack of participation in area events from many clubs, yet a wealth of untapped talent. I will provide clear strategic guidance to address these issues.

Peter Blewett 6th Dan

Ray Stevens - Vice Chairman

"An extremely determined world class elite athlete with an exceptionally personable nature and a great coach."

Ray is highly experienced in many methods of training having competed at Elite level for nearly 20 years. He uses his considerable knowledge to help a very diverse range of people across a number of different disciplines.

For example, he is currently advising some MMA fighters on their technique for the Octagon/Ring, celebrities on their training regimens, mums getting in shape after having children, and teaching Judo to children with special needs.

He is chairman and senior instructor at Wimbledon Judo Club and a senior instructor at the Budokwai. This is the oldest martial arts club in Europe and home to some of the greats of British Judo including Brian Jacks, Neil Adams, Dave Starbrook, Angelo Parisi and Tony Sweeny.

Ricky Haynes - Area Technical Director

Basically I started judo at age 6 dad was a coach with Hugh mapp and George bolt attended Wadham Lodge Judo Club as a junior where Arthur Mapp trained when he won bronze at the Olympics, represented Great Britaian for both bja and bjc with cliff baker brown a close family friend.

I achieved my brown belt at the age of 13 on a line up, yes we had to do line ups in those days for the higher junior grades, at the tender age of 17 iIneeded a further challenge and opened my own club The Elms Judo Club based in Walthamstow, then moved to Kelmscott leisure centre in Walthamstow when it was built and changed the name to Kelmscott J. C in1985.

I achieved my black belt at 18 was a referee but let that slip as I was always coaching at competitions became area examiner in the 90's and was drafted onto the committee at the area AGM where I was appointed the London area technical director of coaching a role I am still doing at the present time.

I also held the role of vice chairman and acting chairman in recent years along with being a 2nd Dan although i hope to finish my 3rd this month.

I have been manager of team Waltham forest for the youth games for the last 20years approx its been that long I don't really know.

Dave Dunsford - Assistant Technical Director

I started Judo in 1974 after being mugged at the age of 11. My dad dragged me down to the Michael Sobell Sports Centre and signed me up for Judo. This was the start of a love affair with this great sport of ours. After training for a while to my dismay my parents moved from Hoxton Market in shoreditch and dragged me screaming to South London.

This was an amazing move for me because none other than Tony Reay was teaching judo at my school on Thamesmead.I quickly realised he was a quality Coach and later moved with him to the 'Plumstead Radical jc' I studied under Tony for several years meeting all kinds of superstars Dave Ede later became my coach and eventually i became Tony's assistant coach teaching the Kai Class which is now known as the 'Kano' class.

Several years later after gaining my Dan grade at the LJS in Stockwell i quickly realised i needed to move around to gain experience which is when i discovered Roy Inman. I have been fortunate to have been around when the BJA was at a peak of top class coaches. I have never forgotten my background which was Drilled into me by Tony which was Kata based.

Tony told me that if i wanted to know about judo i needed to gain experience in all aspects of our sport. So some years later I reached a National Level of refereeing and became an Examiner and now a Senior Examiner where i examine regularly at the prestigeous Budokwai jc. I was voted onto the London Area Committee where i see my role mainly to do with development in coaching. I was asked to be the assistant Area Technical Director to promote courses in the South of London where i work directly under the guildence of Ricky Haynes.

I have been involved in the London Youth Games for years helping both Greenwich/Bexley Boroughs. I am currently the Team manager for Bexley. I have worked hard to build several very successful judo clubs in South London and Now i'm the head coach at Bexley judokwai at a purpose built Dojo in Sidcup.

I'm currently a 3rd Dan and will work hard towards my 4th in the future. I was at the World Cup Dnner and Awards night in 2008 where i was presented with the 'Volunteer of the Year' award by Scott McCarthy.

I'm in the middle of organising what will be one of the biggest projects i've taken on to date. It will give Judo in London the high profile appearance it deserves. I am dedicated to push the London Area forward and raise the profile as we head towards 2012.

Craig Ringer -  Technical Officials Area Co-ordinator

I began judo as a junior back in the early 70’s, where I trained at the Ford Judo Club.  As a junior I represented my club and the area in many tournaments. After a break of several years I became more and more involved in judo when my daughter became interested in the sport. As a serious competition competitor I was soon taking her all over the country & abroad to take part in various tournaments.

In 1999 I became a table official and soon developed the judo bug, as my passion for the sport began to blossom. I attended many events and continued with my studies and moved up to the level of Senior Recorder. Since becoming a senior recorder in July 2006 I have been involved in organizing various tournaments

In order to broaden my knowledge of the rules governing our sport, I enrolled on a refereeing course. The course gave me another perception of how referees viewed an action on the mat and was able to give that immediate decision based on position, force, speed and landing. I recently passed the exam and have now qualified as a provisional area referee, since passing I have practices at low key events in order to develop my understanding. I believe that refereeing has enhanced my role as a table official as it has given me a greater insight into other areas of the sport.

I am keen and have the desire to learn as I am currently working hard towards achieving the Competition Controllers award. I would like to think that I will be able to attain that status before the London 2012 Olympics.

In 2009 I moved from NHC to the London area of judo where I was asked if I would become part of the Competition Commission which I accepted. In March 2010 I was nominated to the committee and have been enjoying what we are achieving in the London Area.

I was  awarded the title of Official of the Year for 2010 which means so much to me and would like to thank all those who helped me to get where I am.

I have a great passion for judo and I would like to continue and help others along the way.
