London Inter-University Invitation Championship

The first ever London Inter-University Invitation Championships were held on a chilly Saturday 28th November 2009.

Hosts, Middlesex University, welcomed 92 Judoka from eleven other Universities to compete against each other in the wilderness of their tranquil Trent Park Campus.

Showing their support for their University and the event, around 50 students attended and cheered on the players from the twelve Universities including Middlesex, Imperial College, Oxford, ULU, Brunel, Royal Holloway, Loughborough, Warwick, Bristol, Bath, Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin.

Taking the most medals was indeed Oxford University, who stormed to the top of the medal table with 6 gold medal haul. The Championships played host to a wealth of Judo talent, with International Judokas from across the World, who study within the English University system, gracing the two-mat areas.

British Judo Development Officer and organiser of the event Luke Farrugia said: “The University competition was a great success and the feedback I received on the day was that the organisation of the event and the atmosphere was something they long to experience more of.

Given the popularity of competitive sport within Universities, ensuring that there is enough competition to meet this undeniable demand, is something at the forefront of the BJA’s development plan for Higher Education Judo, and I hope these Championships will set a precedent for the bright future of University Judo.”

Amid the positive response to the event, it is now hoped that the London Inter-University Invitation Championships will become a regular annual fixture on the University Judo Competition Calendar. With a number of new University Judo Clubs planned to be established at Universities across England throughout the course of 2010, there is even more potential for establishing a formalised competition structure for Higher Education, which has thus far been absent.

London offers the perfect environment for University Judo to flourish, and the London Area Committee is committed to ensuring that the Capital recognises the importance of maintaining the quality of Judo within our Universities, through supporting such competitions.
